Demokratie Wegweiser
Enter a place, tap “Search”, and the Demokratie-Wegweiser shows who represents you politically: from the municipality through district, state and federal level all the way to Europe. For demokratie-wegweiser.de we rebuilt the platform from scratch, with a central database, a digital map and a backend where politicians and parliamentary groups maintain their own profiles.
The portal makes political processes more transparent and gives citizens a direct route to their elected representatives. Our work started with developing the existing website further. It soon became clear that the platform had to carry more: more municipalities, more content and people who keep their own data up to date. So we relaunched the Demokratie-Wegweiser completely, with a new design and new technical foundations.
The map shows at a glance which constituency a place belongs to and who was elected there. Next to it, all elected officials are listed with party, constituency and contact details, switchable between municipality, district, state, federal and European level. Searching by name works too. On a smartphone, everything works just as it does on a large screen.
We built the frontend with Astro: it loads fast and is easy for search engines to read. Behind it runs a modular NestJS backend. In the maintenance backend, politicians and parliamentary groups manage their own data, with clear roles and permissions so that only the right people make changes and the information stays current. The architecture is designed so that more municipalities can be added at any time.
